Bereavement, Grief and ILM Values at CRUSE training

June 8, 2026

Last week, E&G Solicitors hosted an ILM member exclusive event with Cruse Bereavement Support: Wellbeing for Legacy Professionals: Handling Bereavement, Stress and Difficult Conversations. Matthew Lagden, ILM CEO, went along and shares his experience.

I was fortunate and privileged to attend a recent in-person event at the University of Law organised by Jonathan Eshkeri on the topic of dealing sensitively but effectively with bereaved and grieving people.

The training, delivered by Mary-Anne Trotman of CRUSE, was excellent, broadening and deepening my knowledge of this topic and giving everyone the opportunity to share their experience both in the workplace and their own lives.

I came away with a greater insight into my own experience of bereavement and grief. I was also heartened to be surrounded by ILM members who strongly reflected our values of kindness, collaboration, knowledge and ambition.

They were determined to improve the way they dealt with grieving people for the benefit of their charity, the sector, and the lay executor or family member they were working with. It was one of those days that reminds you why we all do this job, and just how brilliant ILM members are.

A massive thank you goes out to Jonathan for organising the event, and for finding space for me!

Jonathan said: “I was delighted that Mary Anne Trotman led our session on Wellbeing for Legacy Professionals. The group size was ideal, and attendees participated enthusiastically throughout a lively and engaging session. I am always pleased to organise valuable events for ILM members, and this one certainly delivered.”
