Could you be the ILM’s next new Director?
September 14, 2026The ILM is looking to appoint three new directors to its Board.
Would you relish the opportunity to be a voice for ILM members and the wider Legacy Sector, to contribute to positively impacting change to drive the sector forward and help shape the future of Legacy Management?
The ILM’s Directors play an integral role in supporting the Chair to set the strategic direction of the organisation, to ensure that we:
- continue to champion the Legacy sector
- consistently strengthen our influence to effect change through advocacy and lobbying
- drive professional standards to help the sector grow
- provide the best possible service to our members
Our mission is to ensure every charity has the expertise and tools they need to optimise the value of their legacies, and to work collaboratively with any person or organisation that can help make the probate sector function more effectively. As a Director of the ILM you will play a crucial role in helping us achieve this.
About the role
This is a challenging, interesting and enjoyable role that will provide the right candidate with an excellent opportunity to develop a wide range of skills and knowledge that will be of broader use in their working life.
You will also be helping us achieve our aims of supporting our members, championing the interests of our sector and driving professional standards in legacy giving.
You would be required to attend four Board meetings throughout the year, where you will be expected to contribute to discussions and decisions that will impact the strategic direction of the organisation. You will also be required to attend various other events as a representative of the ILM throughout the year. Outside of Board meetings, Board members are expected to:
- provide ongoing strategic oversight
- oversee stakeholder and member engagement
- support key decision making
- participate in, lead and initiate ILM projects and activities
- ensure they remain informed about matters affecting the organisation and wider sector.
The time commitment will vary depending on ILM’s activities and the time of year, but you should expect to devote a few hours spread across each week to ILM activities, in addition to the Board meetings.
Who should Apply?
To serve as a Director, you must be an ILM member. You do not need any specialist knowledge or experience to become a Director, just a positive attitude, ability to voice your opinions and a commitment to serving our members and the Legacy sector.
We are ideally looking for applicants from a diverse range of backgrounds and charities, and applicants based outside of London are encouraged to apply. We would be very interested to hear from people with a finance or accounting background, though this is not a prerequisite.
