ILM represents members at Law Society Conference

July 20, 2023

Matthew Lagden, CEO, together with Board member Rebecca Massey, recently represented ILM members at the Law Society Private Client Conference.

A key focus for the day was a talk from Professor Nick Hopkins, chair of the Law Commission investigation into the Wills Act. He provided an update on the work the Law Commission is doing and, in particular, whether safeguards can be put in place against predatory marriage.

Matthew said: “Alongside Professor Hopkins, there was a very moving talk from a lady who’s 92-year-old mother was befriended and then tricked into a predatory marriage with a younger man.

“This is an issue we are looking at in conjunction with our corporate partners Shoosmiths, so it was very pertinent to us and to ILM members. In addition, the event gave us an opportunity to ask questions about whether the Law Commission intends to look at capacity in a broader sense.”

The conference also looked at wider challenges for the wills and probate sector, including how to increase recruitment.
