Wills witnessed via video to be made legal

July 27, 2020

ILM welcomes the news that the government is introducing new regulations that will make it legal to witness wills via video conferencing. The new legislation will make it easier for wills to be witnessed during the COVID-19 pandemic and will apply to all wills made since 31st January 2020. The government has said the measures will remain in place for two years (so until 31st January 2022) but this period could be shortened or extended if deemed necessary.

We hope to issue further guidance from our corporate partners in the coming days. In the meantime, full guidance on the new regulations appears on the government website here.

Today’s Wills and Probate has also published useful guidance here.

ILM Corporate Partner has produced a short video about the legislation, which you can view here.
